Jin-Daichi (Whole Great Earth) is an expression Dōgen Zenji (1200 – 1253) used to define Buddha.
Master Dōgen taught that Zazen is not a practice to turn humans into Buddhas; Zazen allows us to realise that we do not need to become a Buddha, but rather we need to awaken to the reality that we are already enlightened.
Jin-Daichi is an expression for the self that is together with all beings. Dōgen Zenji explained “The ‘self’ buddhas talk about is the whole great earth.” It is not our “small” self, an individual particular ‘self’ that can be contrasted with an ‘other’ – it is the universe experienced as the self.
