Marcus Averbeck
Marcus was born and raised in the north-west of Germany. After his school years he spent 3 years in Taizé, France, working alongside the ecumenical community of monks. He then went on to study at the Jesuit College in Frankfurt/Main where he completed his degree in philosophy, theology and pastoral psychology. Towards the end of his studies in 1991 he was introduced to the practice of Zen by Sr Ludwigis Fabian, Ko-Un-An, and ever since, has been trying to find ways to practice Zen in everyday life together with others.
In 2007 he met Fr Patrick Kundo Eastman, Roshi, who guided him in his Zen practice, and in 2014 Marcus became one of his successors within the White Plum Asanga. He was given the Dharma name Hōzan (Dharma Mountain).
Since 2016 he has been studying Zen with Jeff Shore.
Marcus and his wife Jenny live in Canterbury where they open their Zendo every weekday morning and each Wednesday and Thursday evening to the Sangha and anybody who is seriously interested in Zen (see SCHEDULE).
Professionally, Marcus holds a doctorate in psychotherapy, having trained in systemic psychotherapy to work with individuals, couples and families. He has worked in the NHS from 1994 until 2017 as a couple & family psychotherapist, and as the Head of Family Psychotherapy in a Mental Health NHS trust in the southeast of London. He now has a private psychotherapy practice in Canterbury.
